Atorvastatin

Indications:
Atorvastatin
belongs to a group of drugs called HMG CoA reductase inhibitors, or
"statins."
Atorvastatin
is used together with diet to lower blood levels of "bad" cholesterol
(low-density lipoprotein, or LDL), to increase levels of "good"
cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein, or HDL), and to lower triglycerides (a
type of fat in the blood).
Atorvastatin
is used to treat high cholesterol, and to lower the risk of stroke, heart
attack, or other heart complications in people with type 2 diabetes, coronary
heart disease, or other risk factors.
Mechanism of action:
It inhibits
the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase in the liver, which plays a key role in
cholesterol biosynthesis.
Pharmacokinetics:
It has a
half-life of 14 hours, after absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, is
metabolized by the liver and excreted in the feces.
The correct
amount and method of consumption:
adults:
In the
prevention of cardiovascular disease, 10 mg should be taken once a day.
In familial
and non-familial hypercholesterolemia, heterozygous and mixed dyslipidemia:
initial dose 10 to 20 mg daily, then maintenance dose 10 to 80 mg daily.
For patients
who need a large reduction in LDL (more than 45%) should start with an initial
dose of 40 mg daily.
Lipid levels
should be analyzed every 2 to 4 weeks after starting the drug, then the dose of
the drug should be adjusted.
In
homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia: dose 10 to 80 mg
children:
Heterozygous
familial hypercholesterolemia in children 10 to 17 years: 10 mg daily, dose
adjustment is done by checking lipid levels every 4 weeks.
If you are
allergic to this drug, do not use it.
Warning:
Consult your
doctor or pharmacist if you have liver failure, alcohol consumption, myopathy
or seizures.
You should
not use atorvastatin if you are allergic to it, or if you have: liver disease;
or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Stop taking
this medication and tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant.
Drug interactions:
Concomitant
use of this drug interferes with cyclosporine, fibrosil jam and ketoconazole.
